Glossary Definition

A loan secured by the collateral of specified real estate property that obligates the borrower to make a predetermined series of payments. The mortgage gives the lender (mortgagee) the right of foreclosure if the borrower (mortgagor) defaults. If the borrower fails to make the contracted payments, the lender may be able to seize the property to ensure that the debt is paid off.
