Asset-Backed Security

A bond or note collateralized by a pool of assets, or cash flows from a specified pool of underlying assets. Assets are pooled to make otherwise small or uneconomic investments attractive to investors, while also reducing risk by diversifying the underlying assets. These asset pools can be made of any type of receivable such as credit card payments, auto loans, mortgages, or more esoteric cash flows such as aircraft leases, royalty payments, or other revenue. Typically, securitized assets are illiquid and arranged in private deals.
